LEXINGTON, Ky. – Backup quarterback Shane Boyd threw two touchdownpasses, caught one and ran for another score as Kentucky beat Ohio 35-14 onSaturday night.
Boyd relieved starter Jared Lorenzen after Lorenzen lost two fumbles in thefirst quarter. Boyd scored on runs on 8 and 12 yards, threw a 42-yard scoringpass to Tommy Cook and caught a 30-yard TD pass from Lorenzen in the fourthquarter.
School officials did not immediately know if any previous Kentucky playerhad touchdowns passing, receiving and rushing in a single game.
Kentucky (3-4) limited Ohio (2-5) to 153 yards of offense through threequarters but struggled to put away the Bobcats. Ohio led for much of the firsthalf and was within a touchdown early in the fourth quarter after a 58-yardtouchdown pass from Austen Everson to Ray Huston.
Two touchdown passes in the final 10:07 by Lorenzen, to Boyd and DerekAbney, clinched the win for the Wildcats in the final nonconference game of theseason for both teams. Lorenzen has 74 career touchdowns passes, tying TimCouch’s school record.
Boyd accounted for 169 yards rushing, receiving and passing. His 85 yardsrushing was a season high for Kentucky.
Everson, a freshman making his second start, lost two fumbles and rushed forjust 28 yards on 21 carries.
Tyler Russ recovered Lorenzen’s fumble at the Kentucky 7 to set up Ohio’sfirst touchdown, a 7-yard run by Brad Young less than five minutes into thegame.
Andrew Hopewell partially blocked a punt to give Kentucky possession at theOhio 26, and Boyd eventually scored on an 8-yard run midway through the secondquarter to tie it at 7.
