The UK women’s cross country team captured their first team title of the year Saturday at the Cardinal Cross Country Classic in Louisville, Ky. The Cats, who are currently ranked No. 34 in the nation, were led by senior Caitlin Phillips, who has captured first place in both meets she has competed in this year.
Joining Phillips in leading Kentucky to the title was Brooke Patterson, who finished the 5,000-meter run in a third-place time of 17:52.23, less than 20 seconds behind Phillips’ 17:36.37. Allison Grace garnered another top-10 finish for UK with her fourth-place time of 18:04.76. The Cats blistered their way to the top with an impressive team score of 37. Miami (OH) and Eastern Kentucky came in second and third in the 18-team event with cumulative scores of 64 and 68, respectively.
Without All-SEC performers Thomas Morgan, Hunter Spencer and David Freeman, freshman John Richardson led a Kentucky freshman squad to a 10th-place finish in the 8,000-meter run with a 17th place individual time of 25:47.64. Sophomore Chris Millisor (26:25.13) and junior Mark Rowe (16:27.45) led the Kentucky B team to eighth place among the 18 squads. Nick Devenport, who competed as an unattached runner, led the UK men and came in eighth individually in a time of 25:18.73.
The Cats return to action on Oct. 18, as the travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to compete in the Pre-NCAA Meet, the final competition for the men and women before the SEC Championships on Nov. 3.
