LEXINGTON, Ky. – Juniors Evan Austin and Jesse Witten concluded a fine weekend of tennis at UK’s Moore Invitational with solid performances over a couple of South Florida Bulls. Witten , the ITA’s ninth-ranked player, defeated No. 27 Uli Kiendl, 6-3, 6-3, while Austin eliminated No. 53 Paco Antelo 7-6, 6-0.

The match of the day saw UK freshman Matt Allinder take on South Florida’s German Escallon in a three-set gem. Allinder took a 5-2 first-set lead before Escallon took five straight games to capture the set, 7-5. In the second set, Escallon, at 5-2, surrendered a match point, proving costly as Allinder won the following five games to win, 7-5. Escallon claimed the first two games of the third set before Allinder won the next three. Escallon, as if on cue, won the next three to go up 5-3. Allinder broke serve and held to tie the set at five before relinquishing the final two games and the match to Escallon.

“I’m very proud of the results from this weekend,” UK Coach Dennis Emery said.

“Jesse (Witten) played really well and beat three ranked opponents. Evan (Austin) had two big wins over higher-ranked opponents, and even our newcomer Nathaniel Emge defeated two ranked foes. It was an excellent way to start our 2003-04 season.”
