TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona’s ninth-minute goal would prove to be all U of A would need as Kentucky failed to dent the net for the second time in 2003. UK fell by a 1-0 count before 417 fans at Murphey Soccer Stadium in Tucson.

Arizona’s immediate possession control during the opening ten minutes of the first half paid off in the form of an Erin Bevacqua goal in the upper right corner of the net. Arizona controlled possession for the next few minutes before Kentucky registered scoring opportunities. UK’s best scoring chance came in the 34th minute. Courtney McCrudden intercepted a goal kick and directed the ball to a streaking Elizabeth Ramsey. Ramsey flicked the ball past approaching goalkeeper Natalie Juarez, but her shot dribbled just wide of the right post.

A physical second half would follow, and though Kentucky controlled possession for most of the second half, UK could not find the net. A line drive off the right foot of Heather Saas sailed just high in the 34th minute and a 43rd-minute header from Jen Weakley dribbled just wide of the right post.

Kentucky Coach Warren Lipka was disappointed in the outcome.

“We played well enough to win in the second half, but we got robbed three times inside the 18 (penalty box),” Lipka said.

Kentucky drops its third straight match and falls to 2-4-1 while Arizona improves to 3-3. UK returns to the pitch Sunday in Tempe, Ariz. when the Wildcats take on Arizona State. The match is set for 2 p.m. EDT.
