Several members of the Kentucky men’s tennis team pocketed victories Friday in the first day of the Moore Invitational at UK’s Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
In the ranked bracket, ninth-ranked Jesse Witten wasted little time against No. 19 Paul Ciorascu of Ole Miss, winning 6-0, 6-1. Witten advanced to the second round and defeated Paco Antelo of South Florida by a 6-2, 7-5 count. Saturday, Witten will battle Catalin Gard of Ole Miss.
Newcomer Nathaniel Emge defeated South Florida’s Renato Silverio, coming back from one set down to post a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory. After dropping an earlier match, Evan Austin rebounded to knock off Ciorascu, 6-3, 6-4. Another newcomer, Tigran Martirosyan came back from a first-round loss to defeat Silverio, 6-2, 6-2.
In the “A” bracket, Alex Hume posted a first-round victory before falling in the second round. Freshman Matt Allinder recorded two victories in the “B” bracket, and due to a scheduling conflict, Allinder will move to the “A” bracket.
Play resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Boone Tennis Complex.
