LEXINGTON, Ky. – For the second time in as many nights, Kentucky scored early but could manage nothing further in the remaining minutes as the Cats fell to Rutgers, 2-1 in the final game of the Kentucky Invitational. The Cats drop to 2-3-1 on the season while Rutgers improves to 4-2.
The Cats dented the net early when Lauren Russell, with some help from Jessica Laswell, found a seam in the Rutgers defense and beat goalkeeper Robyn Jones with a line drive into the left side of the goal. Kentucky took the lead into halftime but the Scarlet Knights’ Meghan Carroll took advantage of a scramble in front of the goal and booted in a loose ball in the 74th minute. Less than one minute later, Carli Lloyd drilled a 25-yard line drive past goalkeeper Liz Butler to give Rutgers the lead, and ultimately, a narrow victory.
Kentucky returns to the pitch next Friday, Sept. 19 when the Cats travel to Tucson, Ariz. to take on the Arizona Wildcats. Kentucky won a 2-1 thriller over U of A a year ago in Lexington. Friday’s match is set for 10 p.m. ET.
