LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky waited nearly an entire half to score its first goal but produced a five-goal outburst in the second half to pull away from Davidson, 6-0 Friday evening before 835 fans at the UK Soccer Complex. The six-goal showing was Kentucky’s most productive offensive output since a 6-0 defeat of Michigan State in 2001.
Junior Alli Haeussler led off the scoring for the Cats by booting in a loose ball off of a corner kick with four seconds remaining in the first period. After the intermission, senior Lauren Russell scored from 20 yards out, beating Sarah Hobart on her right side for a 2-0 lead. Eleven minutes later, Russell served up a flawless corner kick from the right flank to Jessica Laswell, who headed in the goal from five yards out. Five minutes later, Laswell booted a free kick to Jen Wilkinson, who headed the ball off the left post and into the goal for the Cats’ fourth goal of the evening.
In the 72nd minute, Danielle Slupski, with some help from freshman Elisabeth Jones and senior Elizabeth Ramsey, nailed Kentucky’s fifth goal from 20 yards away. Just as the scoring appeared to come to a halt, Ramsey sustained a hard foul and was awarded a penalty kick, on which she capitalized for the Cats’ final goal in the 88th minute.
The Cats move to 1-0 on the season and will wrap up the weekend with a Labor Day matinee against Western Kentucky. Game time is 1 p.m. ET Monday at the UK Soccer Complex.
