Lexington, Ky. –
University of Kentucky golfer Matt Kohn advanced in the match play draw of the U.S. Amateur Championship on Thursday by defeating Nate Lashley, 1-up.
Kohn, a sophomore from Longwood, Fla., moves on to the third round of the Championship where he will face David Oh of Cerritos, Calif. Oh defeated Trip Kuehne in his second round match to advance. The match is scheduled to tee off at 2:15 p.m. EDT at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Penn.
Kohn held a two-hole lead going into the 16th hole of his match with Lashley, but lost both the 16th and 17th, bringing the match to all square at the 18th tee. Kohn’s par on the 484-yard par four bested Lashley’s bogey and sent him into the round of 16.

Kohn’s teammate at UK, John Holmes, the top seed at the Championship, was upset, 1-up, in Thursday’s second round by Michael McDermott of Havertown, Penn.
Holmes, a Campbellsville, Ky. native, earned medalist honors after stroke play on the first two days of the tournament, shooting a 36-hole 138, and defeated Rick Reinsberg on Wednesday to advance to the second round.
On Thursday, Holmes shot out to an early three-hole lead after five, but faltered on the next three holes, dropping each to square the match. With the match all square, McDermott won the 14th hole to go 1-up and Holmes was unable to take any of the remaining four holes.
