Former UK swimming great Rachel Komisarz swam the second leg of the 4 X 200-meter freestyle relay in 1:59.34 to help lead the United States to victory in the event at the 10th FINA World Championships Thursday in Barcelona, Spain. Team USA’s time of 7:55.70 was nearly three seconds faster than second-place Australia and fell short of a world record by less than three tenths of a second.

Earlier in the day, Komisarz’s time of 1:59.82 led Team USA to first place in the 4 X 200-meter freestyle preliminaries.

Komisarz, a former six-time All-American and three-time SEC champion, competed at UK under Coach Gary Conelly from 1996-99. A native of Warren, Mich., Komisarz owns UK swimming records in the 200-meter freestyle, 1000-meter freestyle, 1650-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter butterfly, in addition to four records at UK’s Lancaster Aquatic Center. Komisarz also co-owns records in the 200 and 400 medley relays and 200 and 800 freestyle relays.

Komisarz currently swims for the Lakeside Swim Team in Louisville under Coach Mike DeBoor.
