LEXINGTON, Ky. – Scott Carter, a former assistant coach at Kent State, has been named assistant coach and head recruiting coordinator for the University of Kentucky volleyball program, Coach Jona Braden announced Monday.
“Scott brings a wealth of experience to the UK volleyball program. He has impeccable devotion, dedication and deep commitment to the development process of the athletes he coaches and to the recruitment for the future,” Braden said. “I welcome his determination, high energy and contagious enthusiasm. I believe we will experience an immediate impact as Scott joins us in our efforts to grow this program forward with great integrity, heart and purpose. He is truly a great fit for our program.”
Carter, a native of Ithaca, N.Y., has served as recruiting coordinator for the Golden Flashes for the past two and a half years. Prior to his tenure at KSU, he guided both the men’s and women’s volleyball programs at Sacred Heart University from 1995-2000. Carter was the first full-time volleyball coach at Sacred Heart and in his final season, he led the Pioneer men to a 25-6 record while winning the Odeneal Conference title in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) to advance to the NCAA regional tournament. He began his career in 1989 as the head men’s volleyball club coach at Broome Community College.
A 1993 graduate of Oneonta State University, Carter started the men’s volleyball club program at his alma mater. During his playing days he became a student assistant coach for the women’s team and helped lead the Red Dragons to the SUNY title in 1993.
Carter also spent time as Director of Volleyball at the National Youth Sports Program at Yale (1995-96, 1998-2000) and as an administrative assistant for USA Volleyball in Colorado Springs, Colo. (1996-97).
“I feel very confident that the tools necessary to developing championship programs across the board are in place and in the process of being executed,” Carter said. “UK’s commitment to excellence and success is a perfect fit for someone who is willing and eager to contribute new ideas and philosophies essential to progress. In my opinion, the ability for the Kentucky volleyball program to move forward to national prominence is unparalleled.”
Carter is engaged to Melissa Kelly, a pediatric audiologist in Wilmington, Del. He replaces Jaime Gordon, who resigned in March to become the head volleyball coach at Morehead State University. He will begin his duties immediately.
