Columbia, S.C. –
The Kentucky baseball team fell victim to South Carolina, 5-0, on Sunday as the Gamecocks completed a three-game sweep of the Wildcats in Columbia. UK starting pitcher Seth Stanley was perfect through 5 2/3 innings before the Gamecocks got to him for four runs on six consecutive hits with two outs in the sixth. Michael Campbell broke up the perfect game with a single through the left side of the infield and Kevin Melillo followed with a single of his own to put runners on the corners. Back-to-back doubles from Justin Harris and Brian Buscher made it a 2-0 game and consecutive RBI singles from Landon Powell and Bryan Triplett gave USC a 4-0 lead.
The UK offense was unable to score on the Gamecock pitching staff, despite placing runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings. The Wildcats stranded eight base runners in the game.
Kentucky (19-28, 6-17 SEC) left the bases loaded in the top of the first. Casey Gilvin led the game off with a walk and Jake Kungl singled back up the box. After a fly out to left, Caleb Stewart singled through the left side of the infield to fill the bags, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the UK rally. The Cats missed opportunities again in the third and fourth innings, leaving runners in scoring position on both occasions.
South Carolina (32-17, 13-11 SEC) starter Aaron Rawl (5-2) took the win, throwing six shutout innings and striking out eight Wildcats. Stanley (5-6) took the loss for the Cats. Casey Gilvin was the offensive leader for UK, going 3-for-3 with a double, two singles and a walk.
Kentucky returns to action on Tuesday, May 6, as it plays host to Morehead State. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. EST from Cliff Hagan Stadium.
