The University of Kentucky men’s golf team finished in third place, after a frigid final round, at the Johnny Owens Invitational on Sunday, March 30 at the University Club of Kentucky in Lexington. Vanderbilt finished seven strokes ahead of UK to take the team title, while Indiana finished second. Eastern Kentucky and Arkansas-Little Rock rounded out the top five.
Brandon Waldrop, who finished the first two rounds in second place, led the Cats finishing fourth with a three-round total of 224. Ryan Coyne finished with a three-round 226 to finish in eighth place. John Holmes, who won last year’s event, was a non-factor in this year’s tournament finishing in a tie for 28th, with a 17-over 233 for the weekend. Matt Kohn and Mark Blakefield finished 28th, with a 233, and 55th, with a 239, respectively to round out the team scoring for Kentucky.
“I’m glad to see our guys take on these harsh conditions and not get too flustered,” Coach Brian Craig said. “I’m disappointed that we didn’t win, but at the same time I think we learned a lot from this tournament.”
Indiana’s Heath Peters walked away with individual honors after shooting a four-over 220 for the tournament. Brett Jones (Louisville), Jeff Overton (Indiana) and Miles Maillet (Xavier) rounded out the top-five individuals.
UK next plays at the Marshall Invitational in Huntington, W. Va. Play begins on Friday, April 4. Holmes won individual honors in this event last year.
