Three Kentucky errors led to six unearned runs for Indiana State as the Sycamores (4-3, 0-0 MVC) downed the Bat Cats (7-7, 0-0 SEC) by a score of 9-0. Indiana State sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the sixth inning, all of them unearned.
Kentucky could find no answer for the ISU pitching staff, as Sycamore starter Brian Woods (1-0) threw six innings of two-hit baseball and struck out six Kentucky batters to earn his first win of the season. Chris Jones no-hit UK over the final three innings. The Bat Cats managed only seven baserunners for the game.
“Indiana State’s pitchers competed very well today, but we have to do a better job attacking offensively as a team,” UK Coach Keith Madison said. “We’ll come back tomorrow and work on improving on what we did wrong today.”
Mark Galvin (0-1) took the loss for UK, giving up three earned runs on six hits, over 4 1/3 innings. Matt Scott threw well in relief, holding ISU to only one hit over the last three innings. Gordon Tyler had both UK hits, singling in the second and fifth innings.Chris Hall led the offensive surge for the Sycamores, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The same two teams will play the second game of a two-game series on Wednesday, March 12th, at 2 p.m. at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
