LEXINGTON, Ky. – The UK women’s tennis team opened its match against Mississippi State Sunday by taking the doubles point, and the Wildcats barely let up in finishing off the Bulldogs by a 5-1 count at UK’s Boone Tennis Center.

Amy Trefethen and Sarah Witten opened up doubles play for the Cats with an easy 8-0 victory at No. 1 over Magdi Rekasi and Anastasia Kugakolova. Nathalie Roels and Shannon Stafford followed suit as they cruised to an 8-1 win over Yumi Ueda and Patricia Assumpcao at number three. Leigh Bradwell and Jill Buckley completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 2 over Marcelle Hirt and Justyna Switala.

Sarah Witten, Nathalie Roels, Shannon Stafford and Amy Trefethen would go on to record straight-set singles victories to ensure the Kentucky victory. The win improves the Cats’ record to 13-5 overall and 3-1 in the SEC. Kentucky will take a few days off to prepare for the top-ranked Florida Gators. Match time is 4 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 15 at the Boone Tennis Center.
