The University of Kentucky gymnastics team dropped a 194.050-196.600 decision to the fourth-ranked Georgia GymDogs on Friday night in Memorial Coliseum. Despite the loss, senior Julia Gore placed first on the uneven bars and junior Aronda Primault won the all-around with a season-high 39.300.
Kentucky (4-7) led after the first rotation, posting a score of 48.800 on the vault. Primault led the GymKats, ranked 12th in the nation on vault, with a 9.850. She was followed closely by Gore’s season-high mark of 9.825. UGA’s 48.525 on bars gave the Wildcats a 0.275 lead going into the second rotation.
The GymKats fell off the uneven bars twice, totaling 47.850 in the rotation. Kentucky was without the services of their strongest competitor on bars, junior Julie Joy. Gore and Primault again led the Cats, with the former winning the event on the strength of a 9.875 performance. UK trailed by a point heading into intermission.
Senior Mindy Smith led off on the balance beam with a 9.750. But her momentum was not carried, as the Cats fell off the beam twice and could only total a score of 48.425. Primault’s 9.825 led the GymKats, with Gore again adding UK’s second-best score. Georgia’s floor mark of 49.375 put Kentucky further behind.
In the fourth rotation, Kentucky rallied to tally its highest floor total of the season, 48.975. Sophomore Krista Prestigiacomo’s 9.800 started off the event, which sophomore Michelle Gales finished off with a 9.900, the Cats’ highest single score of the evening.
But Georgia’s highest total of the night came on beam, where it totaled 49.400 points. The GymDogs won the meet by two and a half points. Despite the loss, the Wildcats were able to raise their season average.
UK will be back in action next Friday, Feb. 21, when they travel to Auburn, Ala., to face the Tigers at 7:00 p.m. central.
