Huntington, W. Va. – The 14th-ranked University of Kentucky women’s tennis team began their dual-match season splitting a double header on Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Huntington Tennis Club in Huntington, W.Va.
The Cats got off to a rocky start as they suffered a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Virginia Cavaliers. The Cavs (3-1) claimed the doubles point when duos Lori Stern/Kristen James defeated Jill Buckley/Amy Trefethen, 8-6, at the No. 2 spot and Marta and Dora Bechliwanas defeated Shannon Stafford and Leigh Bradwell, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.
In singles Sarah Witten defeated Henriette Williams, 6-2; 6-4, at No. 1 and Jill Buckley defeated Lori Stern, 7-6; 5-7; 10-4, in a tough match at the No. 3 spot. However, UK was unable to claim any other singles points.
UK (1-1) then faced Marshall (2-3) later in the evening and fared much better as they were able to take the match 7-0.
The Cats put on a dominating display of tennis in their match with Marshall as seniors Amy Trefethen and Jill Buckley rebounded from their loss against Viriginia with an 8-6 defeat of Marshall’s Lillie Nzudie and Ashley Kroh in No. 2 doubles. Shannon Stafford and Leigh Bradwell also avenged their earlier loss when they defeated Danielle Hock and Joelle Good at the No. 3 doubles spot.
In singles UK did not drop a single point as each of the six singles players won their matches securing the Cats’ first dual-match victory of the season.
UK plays its home opener on Monday, Jan. 27 at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center on the UK campus. They will face Michigan at 1 p.m.
