LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky track and field program signed two student-athletes in the fall signing period. Andy Fryman, a Maysville, Ky., native, and Georganne Way, from Newmanstown, Pa., will join the Kentucky squad in the fall of 2003.

Fryman, a senior at Mason County High School, set the Kentucky Class AA high school record in the discus throw in 2002, with a personal-best toss of 175-02.00. He also won the state shot put championship as a junior with a heave of 55-01.75. In 2001, Fryman was the runner-up in the discus at the state championships. At 6-1 and 215 pounds, Fryman also has played offensive and defensive line for the Royal football team, winning two regional and two district championships in his career.

“Andy is an outstanding athlete in both the shot put and the discus,” Coach Don Weber said. “He’s the best that Kentucky Class AA track has ever had in the discus. He should improve even more on his personal bests this spring and enter the SEC as a very competitive freshman. Along with Jeff Chakouian, we will have a very talented group of shot put and discus athletes.”

Way, a senior at Warwick High School, has excelled in the 800 meters during her career, improving her personal best time by nearly four seconds during her junior season, making her the seventh ranked senior in the country in the event. Her personal best in the event is 2:11.36, down from 2:15.17 during her sophomore campaign. Way also is a member of Warwick’s 4 x 400-meter relay team and holds the school, district and league records in the 800 meters. Way also played field hockey for her school, leading the team to the state tournament this season as the leading goal scorer.

“Georganne is an excellent addition to the Kentucky program,” Weber said. “Her credentials truly speak for themselves. Her ability, combined with strong training year-round at the college level, indicates the potential for great things in the future.”

The two are the first of the 2003 signing class.
