When Danyelle Payne first came to Kentucky, she knew she would have to wait for her chance to shine. As a redshirt freshman, she had to sit out due to NCAA rules and was only allowed to practice with the squad.
During her sophomore year, Payne was ready for game experience when she was moved from the point guard to the two-guard spot. She would only see limited action, however, at her natural position. Despite the change, her patience and perserverence shined through and made an impression on the UK coaching staff.
“I played point in high school,” Payne said. “I also played the two guard, so I felt comfortable at both positions. I was willing to do whatever it took to help the team be successful.”
Payne, now in her third season as a Wildcat, is getting an opportunity to shine. With senior Rita Adams being moved back to her natural spot at two-guard, Payne is now getting to play — and start — at the point for the Cats. Talk about a role reversal.
That comfort is just what Coach Bernadette Mattox hopes to see from Payne this year. With back-up point guard Raquel Ellis being a juco transfer, Mattox knows that Payne’s year of game experience with the team will help the Cats when they enter the meat of their schedule, especially the ever-tough Southeastern Conference.
“I know I can run the show,” Payne said. “I like being the quarterback on the court. I’m just happy that Coach Mattox gave me the opportunity. I earned it the hard way and that’s made me a better player.”
