Lexington, KY – Kentucky women’s basketball coach Bernadette Mattox has announced the signing of high school senior Ida Edwards of Yazoo City, Miss., to a national letter-of-intent. Edwards will be a member of the 2003-04 Wildcat basketball team.
The 6-1 forward averaged 18.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game as a junior last season at Yazoo City High School. Edwards has been a starter for the high school team since the eighth grade, when she was a teammate of current Kentucky player Shambrica Jones. Edwards averaged 20 points a game as an eighth-grader.
“We are extremely excited about Ida signing with us,” UK Coach Bernadette Mattox said. “She brings the size and versatility that is needed to play in our system and in the tough Southeastern Conference. She can play the three or the four spot and has that athleticism and knowledge of the game that we look for in a player.”
Among Edwards’ several honors awarded in her prep career are twice being named the Yazoo City High School Most Valuable Player and Best Offensive Player. She was named the MVP in both the Canton High School Invitational Tournament and the Yazoo City Shoot-out Invitational last season and also was named to the Clarion-Ledger Dandy Dozen.
Edwards joins Angela Phillips in the 2003 recruiting class. The fall national signing period ends Wednesday, Nov. 20.
