Lexington, KY – Angela Phillips, a 5-5 senior point guard from Oak Ridge High School in Oak Ridge, Tenn., has signed to play basketball for the Kentucky women’s basketball team, Coach Bernadette Mattox announced today.

Phillips, a four-year letterwinner for the Lady Wildcats under Coach Jill Prudden, helped lead Oak Ridge to an undefeated regular season record in 2002 and two state tournament appearances. Phillips averaged 14 points a game as a junior at Oak Ridge and led the team in assists with 7.8 assists per game.

“Angela is a pure point guard,” UK Coach Bernadette Mattox said. “She has all the intangibles; she’s a leader with an outstanding work ethic and she’s a fierce competitor. She also has a big heart and really strives to make those around her better. We are excited about her joining our Kentucky family.”

Phillips’ success on the hardwood the past two seasons has earned her All-District, All-Region and honorable-mention All-State honors. She also was chosen for the Tennessee Nike Team where she earned the starting point guard position and led her team to a seventh-place finish at the national competition in Fort Worth, Texas.

Phillips is the first signee in the early signing period. The fall national signing period lasts until Wednesday, Nov. 20.
