Gulf Shores, Ala. – The University of Kentucky men’s golf team found themselves in a tie for first place after the first two rounds of the Fall Beach Classic on Monday.

The tournament, being played at Gulf Shores Golf Club in Gulf Shores, Ala., is made up of a 13-team field and 72 individuals.

The Cats posted a 17-under par two-round total of 559 to leave them tied with Jacksonville State at the end of the first day.

Sophomore John Holmes led the way for Kentucky finishing the day at 6-under par after firing a second-round 67, leaving him tied for fourth place. Fellow sophomore Brandon Waldrop, who won last year’s tournament while playing for Western Kentucky, shot a first-round 69 and second-round 71 to end the day at four under, and tied for ninth.

Sophomore Matt Wells found himself in the top 20 at the end of the day with a two-round total of 141 (-3). Senior Ryan Coyne, -2, and freshman Matt Kohn, -1, also finished with sub-par rounds, to find themselves in 21st and 24th place respectively.

Tournament host, South Alabama, is in sixth place with a six-under 570 and defending champion Arkansas State sits in 10th with a two-over 578. The final round of the tournament will be played on Tuesday.

This is Kentucky’s final tournament of the fall season. They begin the spring season at the Gator Invitational on Feb. 8, in Gainesville, Fla.
