Freshman Shannon Stough won her first collegiate singles tournament on Sunday, defeating Clemson’s Richele LeSaldo in the finals, 6-3, 6-4.
Stough played well in the sixth flight notching three very goody wins, including a three-set thriller over Penn State’s Lindsay Downing in the semi-finals.
In the seventh-flight round robin, sophomore Danielle Petrisko prevailed 8-3 over Penn State’s April Uy to win the flight.
“I’m very pleased with the desire and effort of our team,” UK Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “To come out on a Sunday after a long tournament and play well is very tough to do.”
Kentucky leaves Nashville with two doubles-finals victories and a singles-final but they definitely wanted more.
“We won some very good matches,” Guilbeau said. “But our goal needs to be to do better in the middle rounds and get more players to the finals.”
UK’s next tournament will be the ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C. Play begins on Thursday, Oct. 24.
