Nashville, Tenn. – The UK doubles tandem of Sarah Witten and Nathalie Roels continued their impressive play on Saturday when they won the flight-1 doubles championship at the June Stewart Fall Invitational.
Witten and Roels defeated the Vanderbilt tandem of Sarah Riske and Aleke Tsoubanos, 8-1. Riske and Tsoubanos won last week’s Riviera/ITA All-American Tournament and are currently ranked No. 1 in the country.
“This is an amazing victory,” UK Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “To be able to beat the No. 1 team in the country is awesome for Sarah and Nathalie as well as for UK tennis.”
In other doubles action, sophomore Danielle Petrisko and senior Jill Buckley, who had never played doubles together, teamed up to win the finals in the flight-two bracket. They defeated Melissa Iqbal and Melissa Woods, Purdue’s top doubles team, 8-4.
“This was a great win also,” Guilbeau said. “These two haven’t played together and for them to win the finals is a great accomplishment.”
In singles action, freshman Shannon Stough was the only Cat to survive the second round of the singles brackets when she won in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-0, over Penn State’s Lindsay Downing. Stough will now face Clemson’s Richele LeSaldo in the finals on Sunday.
Freshman Kacie Anson, who lost on Friday, advanced to the finals of the consolation bracket with a straight-set win over Georgia Tech’s Annelies Schenek, 6-2, 6-3. She will face Kori Scott from Vandy on Sunday.
