AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Kentucky women’s cross country team finished fourth at the Auburn Invitational in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Indian Pines Golf Course. Caitlin Phillips led the team again this week, finishing fifth overall in a 5,000-meter race featuring 235 runners.

Phillips’ time of 17:07.68 paced the Wildcat women, who totaled 98 points in the race. Virginia Tech took team honors with 64 points, while unattached runner Kathy Newbury won the individual title with a time of 16:35.51. Host Auburn finished second, while Georgia Tech was third.

Other Kentucky runners in the race were Brooke Patterson, whose time of 17:11.48 placed her seventh, and Allison Grace, who finished 26th with a time of 17:43.27. Freshman Roseline Addo was 33rd, while Leah Kerstetter was close behind in 37th. Rounding out the group was Beth Heimann in 75th and Jackie Wagner, who finished 111th.

The Kentucky men took eighth overall in the 8,000-meter run, which saw Southern Methodist take the win the 52 points. The Mustangs’ Dalibor Balgac was first with a time of 23:47.59. Leading Kentucky was David Freeman with a time of 24:10.13, good enough for eighth place. Kevin O’Connor was 58th and Justin Amason finished 74th. Paul Ciurlys, Chris Millisor and Andrew Thompson also competed for UK in the race, each finishing in the top half of the runners.

UK will return to action at the 2002 Southeastern Conference Championship on Monday, Nov. 4 in Gainesville, Fla.
