The University of Kentucky men’s soccer team dropped its third overtime match of the season Friday to Mid-American Conference foe Marshall. The Wildcats (7-6-0, 0-1 MAC) had won their previous 11 league matches since their loss at Marshall to end the 2000 regular season.
UK broke onto the scoreboard first in the 22nd minute when freshman Dani Kamras assisted senior John Monebrake on his first goal of the season. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum, in his first action at Kentucky, made three key saves in the half. The Cats took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
Marshall (6-7-0, 2-1) came back in the second half, scoring an equalizer in the 54th minute. Brent Sobczak took a 25-yard free kick that deflected off the Kentucky wall and past the near post. The teams could find no more offense in regulation, and the game was sent to overtime knotted at one.
Kentucky took a pair of shots in the first overtime period but did not find the goal. In the second extra period, Marshall’s Byron Carmichael, the MAC Player of the Week, received a pass from Kirk Gibson. Carmichael slipped the ball past Gruenebaum and it trickled over the goal line.
The Wildcats travel to face the Buffalo Bulls Sunday in their second conference match of the season. That match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
