Nashville, Tenn. – The UK women’s tennis team had six of their seven players advance to the second round in singles competition at the June Stewart Invitational hosted by Vanderbilt University on Friday.
Leading the way for the Cats was senior
Sarah Witten, winning her top-flight match over 82nd ranked Jessica Johnson (Marshall), 6-3, 6-3. Freshman Nathalie Roels continued her outstanding season, improving her record to 8-3, with a win in the second flight over Marshall’s Alice Sukner, 6-3, 6-3.
Other big wins for UK included Jill Buckley, 6-0, 6-2, over Middle Tennessee State’s Stacy Varnell, Danielle Petrisko, one and two, over Emily Vest, also from Middle Tennessee and Shannon Stough, four and one, over Marshall’s Holly Asel.
The most exciting singles match for UK was senior Shannon Stafford taking on Penn State’s Judy Wang. After winning the first set 6-2, Stafford dropped the second set to Wang, 4-6, but was able to rebound and win the third set, 6-2.
Freshman Kacie Anson was unable to get past Vanderbilt’s Ashley Schellas, dropping her match, 6-2, 6-0. Anson will face Georgia Tech’s Annelies Schenek in the first round of the consolation bracket on Saturday.
Second-round play begins at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Doubles matches will also begin on Saturday.
