Sept. 22, 2002
The 22nd-ranked Kentucky men’s soccer team will face Coastal Carolina on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 2:30 p.m. in the finals of the University of Kentucky/Traditional Bank Invitational Tournament at the UK Soccer Complex. On Friday, the Wildcats (4-2-0) defeated Cleveland State, 3-1, and the Chanticleers (6-0-1) beat Marshall, 4-1.
Kentucky’s victory on Friday night was the 100th win at UK for ninth-year coach Ian Collins. Junior Nathan Fleetwood and freshmen Dani Kamras and Jani Modig scored goals against CSU. The Cats have won their last three matches, while allowing only one goal.
Coastal Carolina has won six-in-a-row after playing to a tie in their first action of the season. Joseph Ngwenya had two goals and two assists on Friday to lead the Chants past Marshall.
“Coastal Carolina is an NCAA tournament team from last season that is undefeated in 2002,” Collins said. “They will provide a difficult challenge and come here with many offensive weapons. We will have to play our best Sunday to get a good result.”
Prior to the championship match, Cleveland State (3-4-0) and Marshall (3-3-0) will face-off at noon Sunday in the third game of the tournament. At the conclusion of Sunday’s action, a tournament champion and all-tournament team will be named.
