LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 22nd-ranked University of Kentucky men’s soccer team defeated the Cleveland State Vikings 3-1 in the second match of the Traditional Bank Invitational Tournament Friday night at the UK Soccer Complex. With the win, Kentucky’s Ian Collins captured his 100th victory at the helm of the Wildcats.
The Vikings got on the board early in the match when Stephen Ademolu scored in the third minute. It would be the only shot on goal CSU would manage in the half as the Wildcat defense stiffened. UK junior Nathan Fleetwood scored the equalizer for Kentucky at 20:40 when he ripped a 22-yard shot into the inside corner of the net.
The Wildcats continued to attack in the second half. Sophomore Jamal Shteiwi was fouled 34 yards out near the right line. Freshman Dani Kamras lined up to take the free kick, which he laced into the far corner of the net with a spectacular in-swinger at 50:21. It would be Kamras’ second game-winner of the season.
In the 85th minute, Shteiwi beat a pair of CSU defenders on the left side and crossed the ball to freshman Jani Modig, who struck an insurance goal into the lower right of the net. Cleveland State managed only two shots in the entire match, and the stingy Kentucky defense held on for the 3-1 win.
“We got off to a bad start, giving up a goal early on,” Collins said. “As the game went on we got better and better. In the second half we played really well. We dominated play. Our back four have never really played together, so we’re trying to feel our way a bit, but we were much improved tonight.”
In the first match of the night, Coastal Carolina defeated Marshall by a score of 4-1. Joseph Ngwenya scored two goals and added a pair of assists for the Chanticleers, with Mid-American Conference Player of the Week Byron Carmichael scoring for Marshall.
The Wildcats (4-2-0) return to the field on Sunday against Coastal Carolina (6-0-1) in the championship match of the Traditional Bank Invitational at 2:30 p.m. That game will be preceded by a match between Cleveland State (3-4-0) and Marshall (3-3-0) at noon.
