The 22nd-ranked Kentucky men’s soccer team will welcome Cleveland State, Coastal Carolina and Marshall to Lexington this weekend when they play host to the Traditional Bank Invitational Tournament at the UK Soccer Complex. Matches are scheduled for Friday (5 & 7:30 p.m.) and Sunday (Noon & 2:30 p.m.), with Kentucky facing Cleveland State and Coastal Carolina in the two late games.
The Cats enter the weekend at 3-2-0, having shutout their last two opponents. UK’s first home match was last Wednesday, Sept. 11, against Cincinnati, which the Wildcats won 1-0. Coach Ian Collins will be gunning for his 100th UK win Friday.
“We are looking forward to hosting a very competitive tournament this weekend,” Collins said. “I think it will give the fans some great soccer to watch and should be entertaining. Any of the four teams are capable of winning the tournament. We will have to play at our best against Cleveland State, as they are well-coached, well-organized and play with great fire and passion.”
CSU comes into the weekend with a record of 3-3-0. They have defeated Cincinnati and Butler, the Wildcats’ last two victims, as well as Niagara this season. The Vikings have dropped matches to Duquesne, Robert Morris and IPFW.
Sunday’s match against Coastal Carolina will be no easy task. The Chanticleers are 5-0-1 on the year and riding a five-game winning streak. CCU won the Old Dominion Classic last weekend, defeating William & Mary and ODU.
“Coastal Carolina is an NCAA tournament team from last season that is undefeated in 2002. They will provide a difficult challenge and come here with many offensive weapons,” Collins said.
This weekend’s fourth team, Marshall, has a record of 3-2-0. The Herd have not allowed a goal in their past three matches, outscoring their opponents 13-0. MU’s Byron Carmichael was named this week’s Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, marking the first time in three weeks the honor has not been bestowed upon a Wildcat.
