The 17th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats (2-2) shutout the Butler Bulldogs (1-3) in men’s soccer action Sunday at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C. Junior Jamal Shteiwi netted the lone goal of the day in the 57th minute to give UK the 1-0 victory.
The teams were scoreless in the first half, but the Wildcats did have their chances. In the 12th minute of play, junior Chris Austin found Anthony Peters on a breakaway. The freshman was brought down from behind just inside the penalty box before he was able to get a shot off, but no foul was called.
15 minutes later, senior J.D. Stephenson collected a loose ball at the top of the box and blasted it off the crossbar. Through the first period, Kentucky had outshot Butler 7-4.
The Cats broke the scoreless tie in the 57th minute when junior Jamal Shteiwi took a pass from freshman Dani Kamras and rifled it into the back of the net from 24-yards out, notching his first goal of the season.
The Wildcats controlled the run of play for most of the day and took 10 more shots than the Bulldogs on the afternoon. UK’s senior goalkeeper Greg Raber earned his first shutout of the year by making two saves behind a strong defense.
“We dominated all aspects of the game today and got a good result against a tough team,” Coach Ian Collins said. “We just need to keep improving.”
This match ends Kentucky’s season-opening four-game road stint. The Cats will host Cincinnati on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m., in the home opener at the UK Soccer Complex.
