AUGUST 29, 2002 – CHICAGO, IL – The 2002 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational HostedBy Chaminade University today announced its brackets for the 19th annualfall college basketball classic, which takes place November 25-27, 2002 atthe 2,400-seat Lahaina Civic Center on the beautiful Hawaiian Island ofMaui.
Among the storied match-ups in the 2002 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational Hostedby Chaminade University: Game One boasts a 20th anniversary rematch of whatmany experts call the greatest upset in the history of college basketball,when a small, little known Division II Hawaii school named Chaminade beatthen top-ranked Virginia, led by three-time college MVP, Ralph Sampson. Thewinner of this memorable rematch will face the winner of Game Three, inwhich the rapidly improving Arizona State Sun Devils, under Head Coach RobEvans, try to knock off the seven-time NCAA champion Kentucky Wildcats. Inthe other bracket, Game Two has the University of Massachusetts tipping offagainst the 2002 NCAA Runner-Up and five-time NCAA champion IndianaHoosiers. The winner of that contest faces the winner of Game Four, abattle between two perennial NCAA Tournament competitors, Gonzaga, seekingits fifth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, and the University of Utah,led by one of college basketball’s finest head coaches, Rick Majerus.
The first round schedule, to be played Monday, November 25, is as follows:
Game 1 – Chaminade vs. Virginia (9 a.m. local time / 2 p.m. EST)
Game 2 – Massachusetts vs. Indiana (12 p.m. / 5 p.m.)
Game 3 – Arizona State vs. Kentucky (4 p.m. / 9 p.m.)
Game 4 – Utah vs. Gonzaga (6:30 p.m. / 11:30 p.m.)
Second round games on Tuesday, November 26, are as follows:
Consolation Game 5 – Loser 1 vs. Loser 3 (9 a.m. / 2 p.m.)
Consolation Game 6 – Loser 2 vs. Loser 4 (11 a.m. / 4 p.m.)
Semifinal Game 7 – Winner 1 vs. Winner 3 (2 p.m. / 7 p.m.)
Semifinal Game 8 – Winner 2 vs. Winner 4 (4:30 p.m. / 9:30 p.m.)
