Fort Wayne, Ind. — The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team suffered a 4-1 setback to Purdue in the opening match of the IPFW/adidas Soccer Showcace Friday night. Elizabeth Ramsey, UK’s All-Southeastern Conference forward who sat out last season due to injury, scored the Wildcats’ only goal of the exhibition contest held on the Hefner Soccer Fields in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Purdue lit the scoreboard first when UK was whistled for a penalty kick with 37:05 on the first half clock. Krystal Pepper slipped the ball past UK goalkeeper Liz Butler to the bottom left of the net to give the Boilermakers an early 1-0 edge.
The Wildacats evened it up when Ramsey, playing in her first action since the 2000 Southeastern Conference Tournament, dribbled down the center of the box and skidded a shot off the crossbar that fell into the net at the 28:54 mark in the first period. The Hilliard, Ohio, native earned second-team All-SEC honors as a sophomore but was forced to redshirt in 2001 after tearing her ACL before the season.
PU’s Annette Kent broke the tie at the 34:33 point in the second when the junior forward drove hard in the box and dented the net out of Butler’s reach to the top-left of the goal. The Boilermaker’s added to their lead when Meghan Dybvig crossed to Jennie Moppert and Courtney Coppedge finished the play with a blast to the back right of the UK net. An own-goal off a UK defender with under two minutes in the match closed out the PU scoring.
The Wildcats, who shutout Purdue, 4-0, in exhibition play to start the 2000 season, were forced to play withouth four starters due to injury: All-Great Lakes forward Kathy Fulk, defender Jamie Hutchison, midfielder Alli Haeussler and forward Courtney McCrudden.
Kentucky will next be in action on Sunday, Aug. 25 when it will face preseason No. 7 Notre Dame in its second game of the IPFW/adidas Soccer Showcase at noon ET.
