University of Kentucky tennis player Gustav Pousette has been named to the Verizon Academic All-America At-Large First Team, it was announced Tuesday by Verizon and the College Sports Information Directors of America.

041202pousette1.jpgPousette, a Kolmarden, Sweden native, earned the honor after being named first-team All-District by Verizon last month. A May 2002 graduate of Kentucky, Pousette maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA and received a bachelor of arts & sciences degree in foreign language and international economics. He has been a constant member of the Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, while also being named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. He is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, Omicron Delta Epsilon International Economics Honor Society and Delta Phi Alpha National German Honor Society.On the court, Pousette helped Kentucky advance to the final eight of the 2002 NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament. He rounded out his senior season with a 38-8 singles record and a 22-15 doubles mark. He started the season winning his first 12 matches and was ranked as high as No. 84.

The Verizon At-Large team is selected by members of CoSIDA based on nominations from the following sports: fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, men’s volleyball, water polo and men’s wrestling. Nominees must be a starter or important reserve, have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and have completed at least one full academic year at the athlete’s institution.

Pousette is the 13th Wildcat in UK’s 22-sport varsity program to earn Academic All-America honors this season.
