Doubles Bracket

Palo Alto, Calif. – After a long first day of the 2002 NCAA Singles Championships, both Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten of the University of Kentucky women’s tennis team were eliminated after hard-fought matches. Although the pair will no longer compete in the singles tournament, the tandem will now shift its focus to the Doubles Championships, which begin on Wednesday, May 22.

Witten, a Naples, Fla., native, was eliminated in the opening round of the Singles Championships by Furman’s Megan Dunigan. Dunigan, the country’s 51st-ranked player, defeated Witten in a heartbreaking, third-set tiebreaker to advance.

Mayorga picked up an impressive 6-1, 6-2 win over 16th-ranked Lauren Barnikow of Stanford in her first-round campaign. Although the victory moved Mayorga into the round of 32, it came with a price as the senior from Bogota, Colombia, sprained her ankle in the seventh game of the second set. An ailing Mayorga was then forced to matchup with UCLA’s Sara Walker. Walker, the nation’s 10th-ranked player, narrowly escaped with a win, defeating Mayorga in a three-set thriller, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

With singles action behind them, Mayorga and Witten now team up to form the Doubles Championships’ fourth-seeded duo. Their quest for a national championship will begin on Wednesday when they take on Marine Piriou and Jessica Rush of Northwestern in the opening round. The match is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. local time (4:30 ET) and scoring updates will be available on www.gostanford.com.
