STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Kentucky track and field teams opened competition in the Stanford Invitational on Friday, March 29. Sophomore Jeff Chakouian qualified for the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with his first-place throw in the men’s shot put competition.

The Seekonk, Mass., native threw a toss of 63-08.75 to take top honors in the men’s shot put and lead the Wildcats in the opening day of the meet. Also performing well for UK in the first day was Bryan Wilson, who finished second in his preliminary heat of the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.45. Close behind was Randy Block in fourth place of his heat with a time of 15.16.

Elmetta Johnson placed fourth in her heat of the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.40, while Kristen Mowrey was sixth in the preliminary heat with a time of 14.63.

Jack Morgan was eighth in his section of the men’s 1500 run, with a mark of 3:49.68.

Action wraps up on Saturday evening.
