Lexington, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s golf team finished out a successful weekend on Saturday, March 30 with a second-place finish at the 17th annual Johnny Owens Invitational. The tournament was the first ever collegiate tournament held at the University Club of Kentucky and saw strong team and individual efforts from the Wildcats.
Freshman John Holmes finished the three-round tournament with a 6-under par 207 to claim medalist honors and become the first Wildcat to win the Johnny Owens since Grover Justice in 1995. Holmes, a native of Campbellsville, Ky., finished two strokes ahead of second-place Nicholas Atzinger of Morehead State. UK juniors Andy Dustman and Ryan Coyne also provided stellar tournaments for the Cats. Dustman finished in a tie for seventh-place with his 1-over par 214, while Coyne ended the two-day tournament with a 4-over par 217.
Purdue walked away with the team championship behind Shiv Kapur and Lee Williamson’s top five finishes. The Boilermakers shot a tournament-low 278 as a team in the final round to pass up opening-day leader Kentucky to take the title.
The Wildcats will be back in action on April 5 when they travel to Huntington, W.Va., to take part in the Marshall Invitational.
