John Holmes, a freshman on the University of Kentucky men’s golf team, registered a fourth-place finish for the Wildcats at the Matlock Invitational in Lakeland, Fla., on Tuesday, Feb. 19. Holmes led the Cats to a ninth-place showing at the Invitational, which boasted the presence of 15 highly-competitive teams from throughout the South. The Cats shot a team total of 904 in their effort.
Holmes’ fourth-place finish is the best from a Golf Cat this season. The Campbellsville, Ky., native shot a three-round total of 214, just four strokes back of medalist Steve Sokol of Florida Southern. Holmes finished the weekend at 2-under par. Other UK finishes included senior Philip Schardein with a 231, senior John Beckett with a 235, freshman Mark Blakefield with a 235 and junior Andy Dustman with a 242.
The Wildcats will be back in action on March 11-12 at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla.
