The 20th-ranked University of Kentucky gymnastics team looks to extend its winning streak when it travels to Morgantown, W.Va., for a quad meet on Saturday, Feb. 2. Along with host West Virginia, UK will face George Washington and Massachusetts.
“This is a great opportunity for us to continue to improve,” Coach Leah Little said. “We performed well last week, though we still have a few kinks to work out, and this team has been working hard in the gym. However, we are expecting a tough meet.”
The GymKats (3-2, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) are coming off a season-best performance last week when they defeated New Hampshire, 194.775-191.450. UK scored a 49.225 on vault, the fourth-highest vault score in school history, to take an early lead and never looked back.
Career highs were set or tied seven times last week, including three on vault as Melanie Zaharias scored a 9.925, Julie Joy tallied a 9.850 and Kara Prestigiacomo scored a 9.775. Two career bests were recorded on the floor: Michelle Gales with her second 9.900 of the season and Krista Prestigiacomo with a 9.850. Julia Gore tied a career best on bars with a 9.850 and on beam with a 9.800.
The GymKats hold a 14-2 advantage over George Washington (5-1), are tied at 13 with West Virginia (4-2) and have never met Massachusetts (1-2). UK last met WVU in 2000 in Lexington and claimed a 195.525-194.525 victory over the No. 9 Mountaineers. The last time the GymKats traveled to WVU was for the Governor’s Cup in 1999, and they claimed second place behind the Mountaineers, 195.000-192.575. Kentucky’s last meeting with George Washington came last season in a home tri-meet with Georgia on Feb. 2, when UK topped GW, 193.675-190.800.
