The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team finished out the opening weekend of its dual match season with another strong performance on Sunday, Jan. 20. The 23rd-ranked Wildcats continued their stellar play by adding wins over Middle Tennessee State and Miami of Ohio to up their record to 4-0 on the season.

The Wildcats tallied a 5-2 victory over Middle Tennessee State in the morning match after falling behind 2-1. UK picked up the doubles point to take the early advantage before the Blue Raiders took the lead on two straight singles wins. The Cats rallied, winning out the rest of the singles matches to earn the victory.

In the afternoon match, The Cats cruised to their fourth win of the young season by blanking the Miami Redhawks, 7-0. UK failed to surrender a set during the match, improving its record to 4-0 on the year.

“I am proud of this team,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “This was a demanding weekend for them and they played great. I think we proved in the past two days that we are ready for dual match season and that we can reach the goals we have set for ourselves as a team.”

The Cats will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 25, when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., to take on Minnesota. The match will be part of a four-team tournament with the advancing team facing off against the winner of Marquette and No. 3 Duke on Saturday, Jan. 26.
