The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team began its 2002 dual match season in impressive fashion on Saturday, Jan. 19. The Cats cruised to two victories on the opening day of the season, claiming wins over regional rivals Cincinnati and Marshall.
The 23rd-ranked Wildcats defeated Cincinnati without dropping a point to the Bearcats in the morning contest. In the afternoon it was much of the same, as the Cats routed 70th-ranked Marshall 6-1. UK received two wins from all of its upperclassmen on the day. Senior Lauren Rookledge and juniors Sarah Witten, Amy Trefethen, Leigh Bradwell and Jill Buckley all padded their record with a pair of wins. Freshman Ola Luczak, the newest addition to the squad, also tallied a win when she breezed by Samantha Liu of Cincinnati, 6-0, 6-1.
The Cats will look to repeat Saturday’s performance on Sunday, Jan. 20, when they again face two teams on the same date. UK will battle Middle Tennessee State at 11 a.m. and Miami of Ohio at 4 p.m. Both matches will be held at the Lexington Tennis Club at are free to the public.
