The University of Kentucky women’s basketball team will face Miami in Oxford, Ohio on Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the first of three straight road games. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Millett Hall. The Cats will meet intrastate rival Western Kentucky on Saturday in Bowling Green at 8 p.m. ET and Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond, Va., on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. ET.
The Cats (3-2) look for their sixth straight win over the RedHawks, including a 77-71 decision last season in Lexington. Kentucky leads the series with Miami 10-1 with its only loss coming in 1995. The Cats are 3-1 when playing in Oxford.
“This Miami team is young, similar to our team,” UK Coach Bernadette Mattox said. “They don’t have any seniors but they are talented and very athletic. We have been working on continuing to limit our turnovers and make good passes. We had several players step up in our last game and I look for the same intensity this week on the road.”
UK snapped a two-game losing streak with a 60-57 win over the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday. Freshman guard Sara Potts came off the bench and nailed a career-high three three-pointers and 15 points to lead four Wildcats in double-figure scoring. Sophomore center SeSe Helm continues to lead the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 16 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
Junior guard Rita Adams leads the Southeastern Conference in steals per game, averaging 4.4, and is third on the assists list, averaging 6.6 apg. Senior forward LaTonya McDole needs just 18 points to become the 22nd member of UK’s 1000-point club.
Four RedHawks are averaging double-digit scoring. Junior Heather Cusick tops the scoring column with 16.8 points per game while sophomores Colleen Day and Kim Lancaster follow with 12.8 and 10.2 ppg, respectively. Sophomore Beth Roederer averages 10.0 ppg. Day is the leading rebounder, averaging 9.6 boards this season. Kentucky’s Miss Basketball last season, Katie Schwegmann, is averaging 5.2 points and 1.6 rebounds.
