MORGANTOWN, W.V.– The University of Kentucky rifle team suffered its first season loss on Saturday, Dec. 1, to West Virginia University, putting an end to its undefeated season and placing it at 6-1 for the season. The Wildcats were out shot in both events as they dropped 6197-6171.
In smallbore competition the Wildcats were led by freshman Aaron Shader with a combined score of 1169 but could not find a way past the Mountaineers finishing at 4668-4647. Juniors Curt Fulmer and Robert Krukoski along with freshman Jeff Hamberg shot personal best scores in the event but were not squadded on the team. Despite dropping a tough air rifle competition 1529-1524, sophomore Lindsey Meagher grabbed first place with a total score of 385.
“This is one of the worse scores we have turned in over the past two years,” Coach Harry Mullins said. “We are going to have to really look at the way we performed and see why we did what we did.”
The Wildcats will have a month to reflect and improve their performance as they break for the holiday. They will return to action on Jan. 12, when they travel to Colorado Springs, Col., to take on Air Force.
