LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky volleyball senior April Barnhorst earned a variety of honors for her athletic and academic accomplishments prior to the start of last week’s Southeastern Conference Tournament.

The Greenwood, Ind., native was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll and to the All-SEC second team at the tournament banquet on Thurs., Nov. 15. Earlier in the day, Barnhorst was named to the Verizon Academic All-District first team, making her eligible for Academic All-American honors next month.

Barnhorst leads the team in blocking this season, posting 1.05 per game. Her 10 blocks on Nov. 9 tied her previous career high. She is eighth at UK in career block assists with 251 and needs only nine in her final two games at UK to tie Megan Weiskircher (1997-00) for seventh. Barnhorst has posted seven double-doubles on the season and twice has come within one mark of recording a triple-double.

“April epitomizes the term student-athlete,” Coach Jona Braden said. “We couldn’t ask for a greater role model than her because of her effort not only in matches, but in practice and in the classroom. These honors are a great indicator that other people notice her achievements and are very much deserved.”

Barnhorst, a perfect 4.0 student-athlete, is majoring in marketing and will graduate a semester early in December and plans to attend law school.
