CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Kentucky swimming and diving teams closed out competition at the Nike Cup at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium on the campus of the University of North Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 17, with four school records set and multiple NCAA cuts met. The UK men finished the event in fourth place with a team score of 589 while the women scored 619 points to also place fourth. UNC won both the men’s and women’s team events with scores of 875 and 874, respectively.

Sophomore Joey Faltraco finished the weekend with yet another school-record, winning the 200 backstroke in 1:45.68, bettering the previous school record he set earlier this month against Louisville by almost one-and-a-half seconds. Junior co-captain Roger Watkins also established a school record for the UK men, winning the 200 breaststroke in 1:59.86, besting his own mark from the 2000-01 season. Both times met the NCAA cut standards.

Sophomore Shawna Sechrist also met a NCAA cut time during the final session, touching the wall in 2:00.36 in the 200 backstroke. The time ranks seventh all-time at UK and the time was her second requirement met at the event.

For the weekend, UK swam away with four new school records (Faltraco 400 IM, 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, Watkins 200 breaststroke) and 12 NCAA cut times from six individuals and a relay squad. Senior Carolyn Rader (500 freestyle, 200 freestyle), Watkins (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke), Faltraco (400 IM, 200 backstroke), Sechrist (100 backstroke, 200 backstroke) and freshman Chrissy Miller (500 freestlye, 200 freestyle) all collected two cuts while freshman Marci Vrooman (500 freestyle) picked up one. The women’s 800-freestyle relay squad collected the other.

The teams will not compete again until Jan. 19, when SEC foes Arkansas and South Carolina visit the Lancaster Aquatic Center for a noon meet.
