LEXINGTON, Ky.– The University of Kentucky rifle team remains undefeated for the season with a 6217-6210 win over Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Buell Armory on the UK campus. The Wildcats were victorious in the smallbore competition with a score of 4670, the highest team score of the season, but dropped the air rifle competition 1547-1551.
Freshman Aaron Shader and sophomore James Nash totaled 1175 in smallbore, tying for fourth place honors and giving Shader his personal best in the event. Bradley Wheeldon scored a 1163 while Lindsey Meagher rounded out the team score with a 1157. Alaska’s Matt Emmons took first place with a total score of 1188.
In air rifle competition, Nash finished in second place with a score of 392. Shader took fourth place with a 390 total score. Emmons took first place once more for Alaska with a 397.
“I am proud of our team for the way they kept focus and worked hard on every shot,” Coach Harry Mullins said. “It was a really good match in the sense of competition. You could see that both schools wanted to perform at their best.”
This was a rematch of the 2001 NCAA Championship competition in which Alaska Fairbanks defeated UK 6283-6175.
The Wildcats will take a short break over Thanksgiving but will return to action on Dec. 1 when they travel to West Virginia University.
