CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Kentucky men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both stand in fourth-place after the first day of competition at the Nike Cup at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium on the campus of the University of North Carolina. The UK men’s squad has racked up 175 points while the women have tallied 163.
Freshman Chrissy Miller shined again for the Cats, winning the 500 freestyle finals in 4:50.07 followed by senior Carolyn Rader in second (4:50.35) and freshman Marci Vrooman in fourth (4:53.77). All three times met the NCAA “B??? cut, though Miller’s time in the preliminaries (4:49.84) was actually faster. Miller, Vrooman, sophomore Amanda Bourgeois (4:58.33) and freshman Audrey Johnson (5:13.33) all set personal bests in the event.
In the 50 freestyle, three women set personal bests, Miller (24.30), Vrooman (24.48) and senior co-captain Tracy Sullivan (25.48). Senior Sarah Carter had a personal best time in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:10.01.
In the 500 freestyle for the men, sophomore Joey Faltraco touched the wall in 4:32.12 for a fourth-place finish. Three freshmen set personal bests in the event, David Roberts (4:52.56), Dane Redinger (4:54.00) and Evan Morris (4:55.16).
Junior Eddie Clement set a season-best time in the 200 IM, stopping the clock at 1:52.65 for a fourth-place finish. Sophomore Russ Throckmorton clocked a personal best in the 200 IM (1:55.32) during the preliminaries. In the 50 freestyle, junior Roger Watkins (20.94) and Daniel Wimer (21.24) placed third and fourth, respectively.
The teams accomplished what they had set out to do this weekend as new top times were set in multiple events throughout the day.
“Our goal for this meet is to figure out how fast we can swim at this time of the year,??? said UK Coach Gary Conelly.
The teams will return to the pool Friday morning for day two of the three-day event.
