SEC Tournament Notes
The University of Kentucky volleyball team assured itself a bid to the 2001 SEC Tournament this week, Nov. 16-18 in Knoxville, Tenn., with its sweep of Ole Miss and Mississippi State in late October.
After defeating Georgia on Nov. 9, the Cats secured the No. 7-seed in the tournament and will face second-seeded Arkansas in the opening round on Friday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. Florida earned the top seed in the tournament after going undefeated in league play and winning the regular-season crown for the 11th consecutive season.
Kentucky (13-12, 6-8 SEC)is 31-16 all-time in conference tournament play, but will see its first action in two seasons after missing the 2000 battle after a disappointing 3-11 conference record.Arkansas claimed the Western Division Championship after posting a 12-3 record in league play. The Hogs stand at 18-10 overall and are coming off a 3-1 loss to Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Nov. 11. The division crown is the seventh for Arkansas in the past eight seasons.
The Razorbacks (18-10, 12-3 SEC) took the regular-season meeting, 3-0, over the Wildcats in Lexington on Sept. 21 to open league play. The Hogs now hold a 6-4 advantage in the series, while the teams are deadlocked with one win apiece in conference tournament play. Arkansas knocked UK out of the 2000 tournament with a 3-1 semifinal win in Knoxville.
Leading the way for the Lady ‘Backs is junior middle blocker Libby Windell, who is hitting an amazing .457 on the season while averaging 2.9 kills and 1.3 blocks per game.
