The University of Kentucky men’s soccer team claimed second place in the Florida International University Invitational after dropping game two, 1-0, to host FIU on Sunday, Oct. 28. With his stellar play between the pipes, UK goalkeeper Greg Raber was named Defensive MVP of the tournament.
FIU (8-6-0) controlled play most of the game but was unable to tally any goals. It was a Kentucky (10-5-1) defensive miscue that set the final margin when a UK defender crossed into the path of a Golden Panther shot in an attempt to clear it away from the goal. The misplay sent the ball the wrong way and into the Wildcats’ net, giving FIU the win.
On the afternoon, the Panthers outshot UK 15-4, while holding an 11-4 corner-kick advantage. Raber collected four saves in keeping the Panthers out of the UK net.
Kentucky returns home for its regular-season finale when the Wildcats host Mid-American Conference rival Akron on Saturday, Nov. 3. With both teams carrying perfect 5-0-0 marks in conference play, the match will serve as the MAC regular-season championship game.
