LEXINGTON, Ky. – Rohan Davey connected with freshman Michael Clayton ona 6-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds remaining as LSU beat Kentucky 29-25 onSaturday night.
Davey threw for 383 yards and two touchdowns and LaBrandon Toefield rushed28 times for 129 yards and a 34-yard score to help the Tigers (3-2, 2-1Southeastern) snap a two-game losing streak.
Kentucky backup quarterback Jared Lorenzen led two second-half scoringdrives as the Wildcats (1-5, 0-4) were on the verge of their first conferencevictory since 1999.
But LSU marched 80 yards over the final three minutes and scored in thefinal seconds as Kentucky lost its fourth straight game overall and its 13thconsecutive SEC contest.
Lorenzen entered the game late in the third quarter and threw 31- and23-yard touchdown passes to put the Wildcats on top 25-22 with 3:18 to play.
But Davey calmly drove the Tigers down the field and hit Clayton with aquick slant for the game-winning score.
Clayton finished with nine catches for 105 yards, including 9- and 6-yardtouchdown receptions. Josh Reed caught eight passes for 160 yards. JohnCorbello added 34- and 46-yard field goals for the Tigers.
Lorenzen, a sophomore who has played behind redshirt freshman Shane Boyddespite setting six NCAA freshman passing records last season, finished 6-of-11for 146 yards and rushed five times for another 28 yards.
Boyd was 17-of-31 for 140 yards with two interceptions and scored on a13-yard run before being replaced by Lorenzen.
The Tigers scored on their first two possessions – a 34-yard run by Toefieldand a 34-yard field goal by Corbello – and got a safety when Kentucky wascalled for holding in the end zone to take a 12-0 lead after one quarter.
Seth Hanson’s 24-yard field goal got Kentucky on the scoreboard with 10:42to play in the second quarter.
LSU struck back quickly as Davey hit Josh Reed for 49 yards and, three playslater, found Clayton from 9 yards out to increase the margin to 19-3.
The Wildcats took the ensuing kickoff and drove 77 yards, capped by Boyd’s13-yard scamper on a quarterback draw, to pull within 19-10 with 3:23 to playin the half.
Corbello’s 46-yard field goal with 1:16 remaining gave the Tigers a 22-10halftime lead.
Lorenzen entered the game with 6:00 to play in the third quarter. He neededonly five plays five plays to move the team 80 yards, finding Aaron Boone for a31-yard TD to pull the Wildcats to 22-17.
Lorenzen again drove the Wildcats 80 yards on their next possession, hittingDerek Abney across the middle for a 23-yard touchdown with 8:28 to play to setup the dramatic finish.
