KENTUCKY VS. LSU
OCTOBER 13, 2001
POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Guy Morriss

On who UK will play at quarterback next weekend against Georgia…”I don’t think Coach Richt needs to know who we’ll be playing at quarterback next week. I don’t know which guy we’ll start. We probably won’t announce that until game day.”

On tonight’s game…
“Our intention going into tonight’s game was to try to open it up and throw it more. Things weren’t much different in the routes called. It was just a matter of making the reads and getting the ball there.”

“It was our intention to throw the ball more when we put Jared (Lorenzen) in the game. Shane (Boyd) is more comfortable rushing the ball, while Jared likes to play in the shotgun. Jared came in and performed like we thought he would.”

“Jared has stayed prepared and ready to play. He told me that he’d be ready anytime, whether it was the second series or the 22nd series. He’s done a great job of studying and preparing. He came in tonight and made the best of it.”

UK Players

Jared Lorenzen, QB

On the loss…
“I have mixed emotions about tonight’s game. I am glad that I was able to get in there and help this team out, but obviously we wanted to come out with a win. Rohan Davey is a great quarterback and LSU is a great team. Unfortunately, they are the ones who get to walk away with the win tonight.”

On coming off the bench…”I was able to watch the first half and get comfortable with LSU’s defensive tendencies. I knew when I got in the game that we could get some corner routes to work. Once LSU started to fly back we hit some passes underneath. I felt comfortable after sitting and watching because I was able to see what would work. Coming off the sidelines was best case scenario for me tonight.”

Aaron Boone, WR

On contributing to the team…
“I have been working at several different positions hoping that I could get in somewhere. I’m getting comfortable on the field. I was just waiting to get my chance.”

On the loss…
“It is frustrating. I don’t want to make any more excuses. It is time for us to step up. We’re close to getting over the hump, but we can’t quite make it. We know we can win, but we are not showing it.”

Dennis Johnson, DT

“We went out and played hard tonight. We have to get a victory. Defensively, we let them go 80 yards and nobody made a play. Somebody has to make that play.”

On the quarterbacks…
“Shane played well and then Jared came in and gave us the spark we needed.”

Derek Abney, WR

“We are so close to a victory. Except for the South Carolina game we have improved every game this season. When we are in this situation, we have to learn how to capitalize.”

On Lorenzen…
“He always takes advantage of a chance and he did it again tonight.”

Derek Smith

On the quarterbacks…
“Every time there’s a switch, it gives the team a new mentality. The team doesn’t have a favorite quarterback, but the favorite player on every team is the backup quarterback.”

On the loss…
“It stings a lot. The toughest part isn’t losing, but getting it out of our minds. We have to go out and get ready for Georgia. We must keep building. We have several games left and we’re not giving up yet. We just hope our fans don’t give up either.”

LSU Head Coach Nick Saban

On the win…
“It was a great win for our team. We came through when we had to, and a win is a win. I’m proud of our team. Our coaches are proud of the effort our kids displayed tonight and this gets us moving back in the right direction.”

On UK’s performance…
“Kentucky played a great game. They really battled out there and fought hard. You have to give their coaches credit for a great game plan. They took the momentum away from us in the third and fourth quarters and (Jared) Lorenzen did a great job for them. He got them moving when he had to.”

On the game-winning drive…
“We came through and moved the ball effectively when the game was on the line and never quit. A drive like that builds character and confidence, and it’s a huge step in the positive direction.”

LSU Players

#5 Damien Jones- Free SafetyOn the last play…
“For a second, I thought we were going to lose it. Our offense went down and did a great job to take it down the field and get it done. They knew what they had to do and did it. We were all very nervous.”

On Kentucky…
“They were good. They caught us off guard with the quarterback draw and their defense really picked our linebackers well.”

#14 Michael Clayton- Split EndOn the last play…
“We definitely played hard. I knew I had to make a catch. It was some heavy stuff for me. Coach told me that I just had to relax and try to make the play. We knew what to do and we all got it done out there.”

“I don’t think it was that Kentucky’s defense couldn’t cover me, we just turned it up at the end for the win. It is easy to get it done with such a support cast that I have. They made it easy for me to be open.”

On LSU’s team morale…
“You have to have confidence in the team or you won’t ever get it done on the field. This was a make or break game for us and possibly the hardest of the season for us since we have been off a few weeks. It was such a good thing for us to win this game because it would have been hard to get back on our feet if we had lost.”
